“I THINK the doctor was flirting with me,” Ethan bragged.
Chris rolled his eyes. “One, he wasn’t a doctor. He was a nurse. And two, it was the drugs. Nobody was flirting with anybody.”
“For your information,” Ethan said, holding his hand in the air, “I’m not inder the unfluence of drugs! I’m fine.”
“Okay, whatever you say.”
Chris was driving them home from the clinic, and it was now almost ten o’clock. They’d had to wait almost three hours to get in, and when they offered Ethan something for pain, Chris wasn’t about to object. By that point, Chris himself would’ve liked some of those drugs.
Ethan had called the boys to make sure they’d made it home and to tell them to order a couple large pizzas. Chris called a second time after they finished sewing up Ethan’s thumb, and told Alex and Shane they were on their way home.
The boys jumped up from their seats in the living room when Chris and Ethan entered, rushing out to the kitchen to hug their surrogate “dads” and check on Ethan. “Oh my God, Ethan,” Shane said, “why’d you go slicing up your thumb? Don’t you know thumb doesn’t go with mashed potatoes?”
Ethan started laughing, nearly hysterically, doubling over and holding his side. Shane looked down at him, confused, then shrugged. “I didn’t think it was that funny.”
“It’s the drugs,” Chris whispered. “He’s kind of loopy.” He held his finger to the side of his head and made a circular motion.
“I saw that!” Ethan said, still laughing. “Did you boys eat?”
“Yeah, we got pizza like you said,” Alex said. “Want me to get you some?”
“No! No! I meant the roast.”
“The briquette?” Chris asked. “Might be a little dry unless you wanna whip up some gravy to pour over it.”
The three of them cracked up laughing while Ethan stood there, mouth agape. “Sure, go right ahead and ridicule me,” he said indignantly, suddenly stone sober.
“Oh baby, we’re just teasing,” Chris said. “Look at it.” He pointed to the charcoal roast, still sitting on top of the stove where they’d left it. “Do you really want the boys to try eating that?”
“How many stitches did you get?” Shane asked before Ethan had a chance to protest any further.
“I lost count after the first twenty,” Ethan said. He grabbed hold of Chris to steady himself.
“Twelve,” Chris corrected him. “Come on you guys, let’s eat.”
He grabbed a couple plates and loaded them up with pizza slices for Ethan and him, and then they followed the boys into the living room. After a couple bites, Ethan passed out leaning on Chris’s shoulder. After a few minutes, Chris picked him up and carried him into the bedroom, undressed him and tucked him in bed. Ethan roused only briefly, long enough for Chris to kiss him good-night. He then went back to the living room to visit with the boys.
“I’m sorry about Ethan cutting himself,” Shane said.
Chris laughed. “He’ll be fine. I should’ve known better than to let them give him pain medication.
